A New Era for Careers Education: Strengthening Networks for All Students

The Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, announced yesterday the UK government’s plans to support struggling schools looking to ensure that all students receive an equal education experience. This levelling of education discussion should be accompanied by a vital conversation around the opportunity to enhance careers education through building a strong community around every school. Every child, regardless of their school, must have access to strong career guidance and a support network.

Levelling the Playing Field Through Careers Education

Career opportunities should not depend on a school’s performance. The Get Britain Working White Paper and the Gatsby Benchmarks set clear priorities: embedding careers education into every school, ensuring employer engagement, and delivering quality guidance for all students over the next decade.

Building a Strong Support Network

A successful careers strategy requires collaboration between schools, businesses, and communities:

  • Employer Partnerships – All schools should connect with local businesses to offer work experience, apprenticeships, and career talks.
  • Mentoring Programmes – Students should have access to role models from various industries, supporting social mobility.
  • Parental Engagement – Schools must equip parents with knowledge of career pathways to guide their children effectively.
  • Community Career Hubs – Libraries, youth centres, and organisations could offer career advice beyond school settings.

Prioritising Career Readiness in Education

Schools must be judged not only on exam results but also on career outcomes. Recognising those that excel in careers education, and replicating that across all schools, will ensure all students are work-ready, regardless of background. By strengthening ties between schools, employers, and families, we can ensure the next generation has the support and opportunities they need to succeed.
